Anonymous inquired:

ok so I saw that a while ago you made a post about port wine stains and I was just curious about your experiences of it? I'm a 17 year old girl & I have one over parts of my face and neck and one ear and I hate it more than anything and I don't let anyone other than my parents or sister see me without camouflage makeup and I'm basically a paranoid and insecure wreck because of it and I've never met anyone who has even a vague idea of what it's like so I was just kind of curious I guess : )

Okay, I’m gonna try my best here :) come off anon if you feel comfortable or just continue anon

So I have pws on my left arm/chest/shoulder combo. I’ve always been pretty insecure about it also, like as soon as it was vaguely near cold weather I’d be wearing sweaters and pulling it over my hand. I was never able to put makeup over such a large area, so I’ve never had mine covered completely.

I’ve had some not so hot experiences, for example I’m a freshman in college right now and just at one of the events hosted by the campus some guy walked up behind me and was like “What’s wrong with your arm?” to with I coldly replied “I was born like that.” and he back tracked immediately. There are probably going to be people who are less polite about it always. I can probably count the number I’ve run into on one hand though.

The large amount of people you run into won’t say anything. These will be people you meet in the grocery store, or stand in line with, or sit next to in crowded places. They either notice and don’t care, or they don’t notice.

There are some people who will politely ask you about it. I like to indulge these people, because hey I’d be curious too (but given my situation as someone with pws, I wouldn’t ask). They generally ask “Can I ask about your arm?” or something along those lines.

Then there are the people closer to me. I have asked them, and they said they don’t notice it at all. It’s just a part of who I am. Those who do notice have told me that it looks cool. None of them have ever said it bothers them.

I’ve been lucky, having super supporting parents who listen to me when I do end up crying because I don’t like my pws. They even took me to laser therapy, which reduced the color of my pws on my chest and shoulder. However, I will say “Change yourself for yourself, not for others”. That has been difficult for me to learn. Laser therapy was a small short self journey for me. I do feel insecure about my pws, but I’m trying to accept and move past those feelings now. I’m learning to see it as a part of me, and not this alien thing that I don’t like. I’m not 100% there yet, but I will hopefully continue to try hard.

There was a girl in my high school gym class who had pws on her face and neck, so you’re not alone. My advice, and I’m not an expert, is to take it slowly since you sound like you’ve been covering your pws for a while. Maybe lounge around the house without the camouflage makeup. Take a trip to the grocery store without the makeup. Do baby steps, see what you can handle. Or if you want to, jump in headfirst and just show your close friends.

I will listen to anything you want to say, I’m right here if you need me :)

Things that will make Guardians of the Galaxy more funny when you know the comic background:

  • Groot is actually really smart and a prince. Due to his vocal cords being wood, he makes very high pitch noises and when he speaks all we can hear is, “I am Groot” Rocket on the other hand has very sensitive hearing and can actually understand him.
  • The dog in the space suit is named Cosmo. He’s a telepath and becomes the leader of Knowhere
